word watchers

you ever been compelled keep a food diary? as in, record every morsel that enters your mouth?

sometimes i have no other choice. you see, i'm a mindless eater andi graze my way through each day, giving nary a thought to what goes in. before i know it, either all my clothes have shrunk or, well, i have grown! luckily, the people at weight watchers have just the program for us snack-aholics. its called the point system.

basically the system works like this: food is rated in points with a maximum daily number of points you are allowed - though you can *gain* bonus points by being active. keep in mind, half a georgetown cupcake packs quadruple the points as a yogurt.

lemme tell you how painful it is to write down 3 double stuffed oreos, quickly inhaled and barely remembered - costing me points that even my back-to-back yoga classes this morning couldn't erase.

most of my bad eating habits are simply unconscious. thoughtless. unaware. impulsive, even. but by making myself stop and carefully consider every spoonful that enters my mouth and what it will cost, i find myself making better decisions and healthier choices.

but guess what? it ain't just what finds its way into my mouth that leads me into tight places . . . sometimes its what flies out of my mouth that leaves me more concerned!

geez ~ where's the program for that?

imagine counting sound bites. each caustic word, snappy retort, or sarcastic tone quickly spoken and barely remembered can sure pack on some weight. that tasty slice of gossip cost me karma points i didn't have. yet words of comfort, gratitude, encouragement, and praise actually help shed some weight. and a smile is free - listening is priceless.

so perhaps if i truly want to feel lighter, i will not only traffic the quality of food i take in - but also limit the nonsense of what i let slip out!

now that's food for thought!
