day 34 . . . my dad and my son, practicing THEIR yoga!

my dad has spent most of my life - and at least half of his - disabled.  a woman ran a red light and left my dad crippled for the rest of his life.

and yet, my dad practices yoga.  sometimes twice a week.  not the asana kind, understand.

karma yoga.  selfless service.

every week, for as long as i can remember, my dad has spent his thursday afternoons grocery shopping for a family he doesn't know.  because they can't afford to themselves.  and twice a month, he can be found in a baltimore soup kitchen either dishing up hot food, or slipping the eager kids snickers bars.

ask him why he does it and he'll probably answer - *because i can*  that's it.  and no other reason.

so when my son came home a few years ago and expressed his interest in raising money for cancer - i was pretty touched.  you see, mom had been diagnosed about that time and partly billy wanted to do it for her - but mostly, because he could.  that's it.  and no other reason.

my father's name is bill - and my son's name is billy
.  one named for the other.  and both, very special men.

this is billy's third year participating in the relay for life.  you can help him by offering to sponsor . . . all it would take is a mere $5.  please, read his letter:

Dear Friends of my Mom,

I have joined relay for life again this year, to find a cure for cancer . . .  yet I still have fun doing it.

You know, if we raise enough money we may be able to find the cure!

I am joining people in my school and around the world in celebrating those who have survived cancer, remembering the people we've lost, and supporting the lifesaving mission of the American Cancer Society.

Also my grandmother was almost a victim of cancer - but luckily they caught it early and were able to stop it.  I don’t want this sort of thing to hurt any more people.

So, please make a donation to me or join my team. You are helping deliver the hope that someday maybe there won't be a disease that can kill grandmothers and grandfathers, moms and dads, even children.

You have the power to fight back against a disease that affects millions.  I hope you will help by making just a $5 donation right now!  Imagine what would happen if everyone donated as little as a few dollars - imagine what a difference we could make.

Thanks for your support!

Billy Powell, age 12
