yoga - welcome to the changing room

one of my favorite lines is from a story that sri dharma mittra regularly tells.  its of a student who was concerned that some of his "habits" would get in the way of his yoga - smoking, in particular.  but when he asked his teacher if his smoking would get in the way, his teacher answered:

*smoking will not get in the way of your yoga . . . but your yoga may get in the way of your smoking*

when i began practicing yoga, i too was a bit concerned that my lifestyle did not match that of a true yogi - cuz it didn't.  as i explain on my yoga website:

“It took me the longest time to try yoga. You see, I had this vision of people that do yoga as some elitist group of enlightened ones who would never welcome me and all my unbridled energy, along with a few bad habits, as well!   Plus, I figured all you did in a yoga class was sit in a twisted position with your thumb and forefinger pressed together and hum aloud.  Oh, and a naptime at the end!

It was about 10 years ago.  I was the director of counseling for a school system, working on a doctorate, raising two children solo, and squeezing in kickboxing classes four times a week. Sleeping and eating were luxuries afforded sparingly.  At the urging of a friend, who probably knew I was a train wreck waiting to happen, I went to my very first class.

And from that moment on, yoga completely destroyed life as I knew."

i asked around, and it seems i'm not the only one who believes yoga is the great transformer.  here's what i learned hanging around down dog yoga studio for an afternoon.
