don't mess with me dude - i'm lunar

*the moon is a white strange world, great, white, soft-seeming globe in the night sky,
and what she actually communicates to me across space I shall never fully know*. . . . d.h. lawrence

*take a deep breath . . . a little deeper . . . a little deeper . . . ok, now hold.

feel that upsurge of energy as it rises to you head?  perhaps you begin to feel heady or even a little dizzy.

this is full moon energy.  a day when you're likely to feel an outpouring of energy (prana), but so much so, you can lose your grounding, feel more emotional, even a bit more headstrong and impulsive.

*now exhale.  fully.  completely.  and hold.

you feel the energy as it moves down the body.   perhaps you feel heavier, slower, and sluggish.

this is new moon energy.  a day when you move a little slower, perhaps feel a bit calmer, but with a need to rest and be grounded.  your energy is moving down (apana), and it best to just give in to this feeling of rooting oneself in stillness.

not everyone believes in the energy of the moon.  i do.  and i'm not alone . . .

  • gardeners have long observed the cycle of the moon - transplanting during a full moon when flowers have the energy to survive their uprooting and planting new seeds during a new moon, when the natural energy draws their roots down.
  • ashtangis observe both full moon and new moon days as holidays from asana practice - believing that when these two powerful stars are in conjunction, we should adhere to their combined force (new moon) or opposing force (full moon).  the sheer strength of both forces, and its effect on our being, leaves yogis more vulnerable to injury and therefore a yoga asana practice is not advised.
  • surfers take note of the moon cycle, as during full and new moons, the difference between high and low tide is at its most significant - sometimes making surfing a real challenge.
  • Hippocrates once wrote that "no physician should be entrusted with the treatment of disease who was ignorant of the science of astronomy," and many studies concur that ER visits increase during both moon days, though more so during full.
  • several studies report statistically significant correlations between phases of the moon and human behavior such as the number of individuals seen at psychiatric clinics, discipine referrals in schools, and criminal activity.
  • the very word lunatic comes from the latin word for moon, luna.
admittedly, there are many other people, who believe this is pure folklore  . . . including my husband, who yet still goes out of his way avoiding me on moon days just the same!

all i can say
is i feel her in all her intensity
.  i feel the surge of energy within my own body when the moon shine bright in the sky, leaving me distracted  and uncharacteristically irritable.  and when the moon disappears from my eye, i can feel the grounding in my feet, the need to rest and reflect.

this sunday, may 24th is a new moon.  take note how YOU feel . . . be conscious of YOUR energy . . . and then flow with nature's cycle accordingly.

and if you see me, for heaven's sake, do stay clear . . . and don't say you weren't warned!
