never the same water

. . the past may be no rule for the future, all experience becomes useless and can give rise to no inference or conclusion.  (david hume)

we forget that as we grow and change, our experiences in life follows suit.

meghan and i wanted to go white water rafting for the day.  billy strongly objected.

all he could remember was his experience 5 years ago, sitting in front, and hanging on for dear life.

never mind that he was nearly a foot shorter with half the strength he now possesses.  never mind that since then, he has survived far bigger dangers and more precarious moments than that short ride down the yellowstone all those years ago.

i tried to explain that his experience then was through much smaller eyes . . . that he is bigger now.  stronger now.  and far more able and confident.

then something miraculous happened:  he believed me.

and just as i predicted, billy had a much different experience this time around.  he loved the ride! sure, same ride.  same place.  same river.

but this time - different person.
