sorry - its the destination for me

i watched them come in groups.  walk the trail just to the place it gets sketchy.  well above tree line, the path narrows considerably and winds around a sheer rock cliff.

and i watch them come to the edge . . . and leave.  stop.  turn around.  go back.

because that's what fear tells us to do.

the ledge is not comfortable.  and its risky.  but it is also temporary and, most importantly, the only route to anything spectacular.

wish as we may, we cannot bypass or avoid the scarier parts of our journey.

my friends and i made it past the narrow ledge . . . admittedly, one needed a helping hand and some encouragement.  but aren't people put on our path to provide us with just that?  does it say anywhere we have to do everything alone?

as we hiked along, the path - and the view! - completely opened up.  we saw a world we would not have known existed had we not rounded that treacherous corner.

and there were more . . . more times we felt a little weak in the knees.  times we felt so weary from walking.  or encountered obstacles so big, so insurmountable, and so unexpectedly . . . the hike would feel impossible.

truth is, most of the hike itself was truly awesome - with only pieces that were ordinary, or even risky or difficult.

they say its not about the destination . . . but it kind of really is.  only there's not just one, but many.  and each new destination we reached, did require come maneuvering just before.  a little risk taking.  and lots of effort.

i have friends that have been on that ledge for years.  that refuse to take the next step out of fear.  i know people that get tired and give up.  and i understand how impossible obstacles can seem.

perhaps for them, it is their journey . . . but for me?  sorry.  i'm in it for the destination/s!
