monday's mantra

monday's mantra:  i see you

last night, i saw avatar (of course, in 3d).  in the movie, the na'vi greeted each other with their own form of namaste.

i see you.

but do we ever really see each other?
i mean, without our own filters?

in buddhism, there are three particular filters that poison our vision of one another:  passion, aggression, and ignorance.  and this is how we group people as friends, enemies, and those we feel complete indifference.

nice, pat little classification system we have going on.  and one that keeps us from bothering to ever really see.

once we label another, we see them only as they serve us - and not as they truly are.  the truth is, we are just as connected to those we love, as we are to those we hate, as we are to those we don't know at all.

i see you.

as you are.  the divinity that connects us.  and i recognize that we are one.

what would happen if we dropped old hurts  - along with future dreams?  what if we dropped assumptions and prejudices?

would you dare treat a stranger with the same loving-kindness as you would a loved one?  could i?

thy neighbor as thyself ...  namaste ...  i see you ...

not just words.  mindless verbiage.  a nice thought.

instead, a mantra that could truly change our world - if we dare.

    Peg,

Your words resonate with two quotes I came by yesterday (on my online calendar):

    1) The final test of our character: how we treat one who is of no possible service to us.

    2) Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, never an opportunity.

    Great post, thank you.
