monday's mantra: believe in six impossible things before breakfast

"Alice laughed: "There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things."

"I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

Alice in Wonderland

“there’s no way the door locked itself.”

my friend was convinced there was either someone in her house ... or a ghost.  sitting in her back yard, suddenly locked out of her home -  she was more willing to accept caspar as the culprit than believe in the impossible:  that the door locked itself.

i stayed on the phone with her as she walked through house, checking for the perpetrator.  if it was of human persuasion, i’d call the police.  not sure what i’d do with the other . . .

so convinced it was impossible that the door simply latched itself, she would only humor me by re-opening the door and let it swing closed - just the way she had minutes before.  and no, the door didn’t lock again - but it came pretty close

seems the impossible may have been possible, after all
.

happens all the time.  we are so sure of what we know, so sure there’s nothing more.  we think we have all the facts and are intimate with the realm of what can be and what cannot.  we accept limitations in the name of realism and like alice, declare, “there’s no use trying.”

yet - as i write, i have seen the impossible happen.  miracles.   and nearly every single day.

i have felt a God my eyes could not see ... found a love made only from dreams ... discovered more strength in my 40's than my 20's ... survived one child’s adolescence (i now have hope for child #2) ... and seen a woman become president (almost!).

crazy stuff, actually.

admittedly, i have my doubts.  but still, i choose again and again - to believe.

when i was little, i was confident i could fly - or at least, learn.  so i would practice my skills between the living room couch and chair, jumping flying from one to the other.  i was sure i could increase my time and distance with practice.  but even if i didn’t, i sure as heck had a great time trying!

(this, by the way, may be news to my mom who sometimes reads this blog.  so, sorry mom!)

even now . . . i practice flying still.  because flying is still #1 on my list of impossible things.

what’s on your list?  how many things can YOU still believe in?

quick!  it’s almost breakfast!

come learn to fly with me this saturday
