WWPS

ever wonder what patanjali would've thought of facebook?

yamas, social (media) discipline:

  • ahimsa ... no harm.  not even in the name of truth, politics, or that nasty fight you just had with your frenemy.  a post is not a weapon and words, contrary to a schoolyard boast, DO hurt.
  • asteya .... don't steal.  that profound status you just put up, the one everyone likes?  yea well, it's a quote from thich nhat hanh so you better give credit!
  • brahmacarya ... show some restraint.  yes, you look great in that barely-there-thong bikini and your new breast job has turned out fantastic (though curious why you pull a demi to photograph?).  sext it to your honey - but best keep it off the public feed.
  • aparigraha ... don't be greedy.  9985 friends?  really?  you don't call that greedy?

niyamas, self retstraint

  • sauca ... keep it clean.  your status updates should not read like the lyrics from an eminem song.
  • santosa ... be content.  that's right, quit your whining.  as my friend brooks said, don't you know these are first world problems?
  • tapas ... be disciplined.  a little stinginess here folks to keep your posting focused.  no need to document each meal, folly or fancy.  deviate a little, but mostly stick to message.
  • svadhyaya ... self study.  every now and then, it's good to do a little online reflection and subsequent clean up.  go ahead, use the delete button (it's there for a reason, y'know).  a quick sweep of the friends you're keeping, the pages you're liking, and the notes you post - do they truly reflect the person you are?
  • isvara pranidhana ... recognize that there is a bigger force than you - and i'm not referring to mark zuckerberg.  the world wide web is as it's name says, therefore whatever you put out there, you have just surrendered to a universe much larger than your circle of 350 friends.  make sure you're giving your best.

so .... What Would Patanjali Say?  (WWPS)

well, now you know!
