your om practice
as a beginner, she was allowed to explore, take risks,
make mistakes. but just like in every other facet of life, once we
start to show promise and pass some arbitrary beginner's gate, the rug
is pulled and we discover the inevitable - there are rules.
apparently we cannot grow without someone shoulding us all the way.
my friend, so eager to please and get it right, has spent the past
months following those in authority. she disregarded pain as her own
weakness and her doubts as evidence of her own inadequacy.
a
practice that once brought her happiness and an escape from the
pressures of daily life has evolved into just another source of struggle
and constant judgment. until finally, she asked herself:
"when did my yoga stop being about me?"we all do it. think someone else always knows better that we do. chalk it up to a healthy sense of humilitiy along with a dash of insecurity but we doubt and second guess our way straight out of our once happy OM.
there are very few things in life that are all about you - but your yoga practice is one of them. the whole idea is to bring you closer to your own essence and source. the trick is to stay the beginner .... explore, take risks, make mistakes, and delight in the discovery and possibilities.
sure. there are rules good to be followed. but there are also those good to be broken. the only tricky part is knowing which is which.
keep your yoga about YOU and i'm quite sure you'll figure it out!
a one hour practice
the primary series of ashtanga yoga is pure healing joy. i remember the summer after i tore my hammy - for the second time. this was my yoga ... and continues to be a source of strength, solace, and inspiration as i grow within this lineage.
below you will find two links to a one hour led podcast through a modified primary series of ashtanga. it includes sun salutations and a modified standing, floor, and finishing series.
this practice has been a gift in my life - and my gift to you.
