OM on the range
yep, that's right. where the deer and the antelope roam.
i’ve practiced yoga in some pretty crazy places … including the jungles of costa rica, the beaches of thailand, a dock in belize, and even the white house lawn.
but none so unimaginable as this weekend - in the middle of a dusty Montana cow pasture. me and about 30 or so others, some still donning cowboy hats and jeans, presumably from the night before.
they came on foot, by ATV , and even horseback – but they came, carrying makeshift yoga mats for sunday morning practice led by anusara teacher, heidi fledderjohn.

yee-haw and welcome to the red ants pants music festival – the brain child of sarah calhoun, just an ordinary girl with extraordinary ideas!
(little contextual background on sarah calhoun and her red ants pants)
sarah got fed up with the way square-cut men’s work pants would either ride up curvy hips or sneak-a-peek of a plumber butt while she was working wilderness trails and peeling logs. So she designed her own brand of work britches - and launched red ants pants for the gals in 2006.

this weekend marked the first annual music festival sponsored by red ants pants, complete with morning yoga, was another of sarah’s wildly bold and successful dreams - along with a few of her pals from white sulphur springs, MT (population, 938)
nearly five thousand country and blue grass music lovers gathered from all over the state to hear artists that included lyle lovett and the large band, jerry jeff walker, rodney crowell, and guy clark – along with some more up and coming bands like bearfoot, the trishas, and even our local big timber doc, ben bullington,
all this to benefit struggling family farms and ranches and women in business.
i don’t know who this chick from some tiny working class town in the middle of nowhere thinks she is, going out and gallantly trying to change our world … but i’m sure as hell glad she does.
whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.
boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. begin it now.”
– goethe
sarah was pinching herself when she realized how successful her little idea became ... and for me to see sarah, just a small town girl with a big time dream, changing her world, was PURE INSPIRATION. she could easily be me … or you.
sarah beamed as she took stage Sunday afternoon to thank the crowd and celebrate the event’s success: “almost 5,000 people – and not one fight!”
of course not. these ain’t just cowboys/girls, sarah … these are yogis!
wonder what would happen if yoga hit the halls of congress … perhaps a few less arguments and a little more reform?
hmmmmmm, maybe sarah could pay them a visit and show ‘em how it’s done…

hope you're having a boot stomping and rip roarin' summer ... tearing it up and practicing yoga any chance you get!!

Peg, I thought about you today as I walked up to a lake in rural Pennsylvania to kayak and there was a woman doing a headstand on her towel on the sand. I even did my yoga practice on the edge of the pool the other day while my son dove for objects. Thank you for the reminder that yoga can be done anywhere! xo
